AMD News .. and my thoughts ..

April 29, 2008

posted by PcWorld ..

AMD has approximaely 100 laptop designs based on their upcoming Puma laptop chipset platform being readied ahead of the new platforms launch in June, according to a AMD company spokesman.

“That’s twice as many designs as we had at the launch of our last mobile platform”, said John Taylor, diretor of product and strategic marketing at AMD’s Graphics Productts Group, when he spoke at a news conference in Singapore.

AMD is planning to launch it’s Puma platform during the Computex trade show in June, where many of the upcoming Puma laptops are expected to be on display. They’re supposed to be more power efficient and have improved integrated graphics. Puma is based on AMD’s upcoming Turion X2 Ultra microprocessor, also known by the code name Griffin.

Puma will include a chipset with integrated graphics, and an ATI Radeon HD3400 discrete graphics chip. WiFi connectivity is provided by a thrid party chipset with support for 802.11a/b/g/n.

My Thoughts :

I’ve been a big fan of AMD going all the way back to my old (and now fried by yours truly ..hey these things happen..) Athlon 64 2800+ and that’s going back in time a bit. Yes if AMD hadn’t been able to innovate with the design of the Athlon 64’s and Athlon 64 X2’s, Intel wouldn’t have been under any pressure to release the Core/Core Duo and Core 2 Duo microprocessors.

Intel was the laughing stock for awhile with the Prescott based Pentium IV’s and on top of that AMD microprocessors had faster throughput with their integrated memory controller design, even though their native clock speeds were always lower then Intel’s competing product. The bottom line is that AMD at one point had the more efficient microprocessor and now that ball is in Intel’s court. They have now run away with it.

Oh by the way, I replaced my old and fried Athlon 64 2800+ with the Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 and I haven’t looked back since. I do want AMD to catch up and exceed Intel again though, isn’t that what this thing called competition is all about?

my thoughts about podcasting ..

April 19, 2008

I really do believe that blogs and podcasting is the true 21st century media format. If you think about it they both really do go together rather well, but might ask why blogs power something so new when blogs date back to the middle to late 90’s and maybe even earlier then that. You could say, and some people have, that blogs are outdated and outmoded due to the larger number of ways to collaborate with others and to get thoughts and ideas shared with larger numbers of people; such as Twitter, Pownce, FriendFeed, Jaiku, SocialThing, and the list goes on and on.

What else is the best option to empower podcasting? There aren’t any and it’s almost expected to have a blog if you have your own podcast. Why is that you ask? I think it’s got a lot to do with the fact that even today to have a blog is the beginning of “in” and how can your opinions and thoughts matter online to anyone if you don’t have a blog regardless of content format?
